* Saved $/% is a hypothetical amount based on what we have seen in the marketplace. It is meant to be a good faith estimate only and not as an exact amount.

Free Directory Assistance

If there is one thing I hate, it is looking at the phone bill and seeing a charge for $1.95 or more for directory assistance calls.  When I am at home, I can easily jump online and search for a phone number, but when I am out and about or at a stoplight, surfing the net is not so easy yet.

Well Google once again steps up and offers a FREE service.  Yes FREE.  What's the catch I immediately ask.  None that I can find.  So I try it.  It has got to suck.  Nope.  Worked fine for me.  And it is FREE.  A Sea Of Money key word!!!  So try it right now.... 1-800-GOOG-411.

** Savings  $1.95 * Number of Directory Assistance Calls or the ones I would of made if I wasn't so cheap, but instead I insisted ondriving around lost.

Priceline is great - two thumbs up

Since our last article on Priceline.com's Name your Own Price article, we have used Priceline 3 times.  The first stay was at a 3 star hotel  in a major city which turned out to be excellent in service and location.  We paid slightly over $100 for 2 days during a busy weekend.

This year I tried again and I got the same hotel (but it was renamed the Doubletree) during the 4th of July weekend for $75.  I then bid for another hotel downtown a month and a half in advance and got a Marriott for $90.  The going best rate I could find was $215.

You have to be careful because you can become a little to enthusiastic!  Sometime I want to bid for a hotel just to see if I can get a bargain.  Well in the future I plan to just bid for a hotel and if we get a great deal we will make a mini vacation of it.

One other thing to be aware of is if you win, your credit card is charged right away and you cannot cancel.  I think you can buy cancellation insurance for particular emergencies.

After I win the bid, I call the hotel to make sure I can get a two bed non-smoking.  They treat me like any other customer and not like someone who got a bargain.

So if you know you are going to a particular city or if you like to hang out where you live near, try Priceline and name your own price.  It is fun and you save money.

Fix Your Own Windshield
Whack was the sound I suddenly heard as a rock hit my windshield. I quickly looked to see if there was a crack in the window but I could not see one. Phew.

But as luck would have it as soon as we got home my daughter pointed it a said "There is a crack in the windshield." Sure enough there was a a half inch star shaped crack on the right side of my windshield.

My insurance company willl cover the repairs and I have a low deductible. In fact, my insurance company like others will cover the deductible as well if I just have it repaired versus replaced. I have gone through this before and for the most part have had decent experience with the glass repair route. They will even come to you at work and repair it. The last repair job was not perfect, but I really didn't mind.

In the back of mind, I wondered if even these small repairs added somehow to my risk profile and therefore added to my premiums. I am not sure if they do or not.

In any case, this time I decided to forget about even calling the insurance company. I didn't feel like calling the insurance company and I also wanted to try to see if I could repair the crack myself. It did not look like rocket science.

So I went and bought this repair kit.Fix-A-Windshield, Do-It-Yourself Windshield Repair Kit It is available at Amazon for like $11. I read the instructions and attempted to repair my window. It took a little longer than advertised (maybe 30 minutes), but I did a pretty good job. It is not perfect but I am satisifed. It is greatly improved. Compared to the so called pros I was really close!

So the way I look at it, I spent $11, learned something, maybe even saved on my premium(?) and prevented the crack from growing even bigger.

One more thing I know how to do which in the future may save me time and money if another rock comes flying my way. Fix-A-Windshield, Do-It-Yourself Windshield Repair Kit
